Usually when you or your interior designer are considering adding wallpaper to a project - the first thought that comes to mind is adding prints to the walls. However, you can really create wow factor and change an entire room by transforming ceilings with wallpaper. Keep reading below to learn more about ceiling wallpapers including photos of some of our favorite projects.

One major benefit is the dramatic impact created in a room. The wow factor is off the charts. You can create major impact when you wallpaper a ceiling. Accent walls have long been a popular use for wallpaper, but why stop at walls? Adding a print above head can be even more dramatic. Add in a perfect lighting fixture to a dining room or bedroom and the finished project can have amazing impact.

Another reason to consider ceiling wallpaper is the lack of maintenance required. Ceilings are far less likely to receive scuffs, splatters, or other damage that walls are often subject to. Ceiling wallpaper is most likely never going to require a cleaning or repair! This allows for use of more luxurious materials like Silk wallpaper and Grasscloth wallpaper.

An overlooked but valuable benefit of ceiling mounted wallpapers is the lack of UV light exposure. Ceilings usually do not receive direct sunlight like vertical wall surfaces. While maybe not a reason in itself to undertake a ceiling wallpaper project, the avoidance of UV light is definitely an added benefit. The lack of ultraviolet light exposure allows your prints to look vibrant for years to come.

Like all of our wallpaper we suggest using a certified professional wallpaper installer for all the reasons we’ve outlined in our FAQ - Can I hang wallpaper myself?  Our recommendation is compounded when installing on a ceiling. Even the with the proper tools and experience a DIY installation is not advisable. The difficulty in handing paper on your back up in the air is best left to the professionals.

While cheaper peel and stick style wallpaper might initially seem to be an attractive opinion, you should steer clear of peel-and-stick wallpaper for ceiling installations. The adhesive bond is not high enough for a horizontal upside down installation. Traditional paste the paper and paste the wall, like the offerings from Poppy are much better suited to last. The wallpaper adhesive used for traditional wallpaper will create a lasting bond and insure that your panels don’t start lifting and falling down.

Smooth ceilings are required for wallpaper installation. You will not be able to have a popcorn or textured ceiling wallpaper. All of the standard installation instructions for walls apply to ceilings as well, ceilings needs to be smooth and properly prepared prior to installation. This can include sanding and applying wallpaper primer.

In short - no. We do no not recommend a wallpapered ceiling project for rentals. A ceiling wallpaper installation will likely cost more than a standard wall installation due to the added labor costs.

In general - anything goes! An interior design or a homeowner with the proper eye can work any style of design into a wallpapered ceiling, it all depends on the aesthetics of the room. Personally, we like large repeat or mural style designs ceilings. These styles of designs are bit more forgiving during installation and they’re easier to see while standing on the floor.
